SAN ANTONIO, TX — Skanska announces it has reached a significant milestone on the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) campus, with the topping out of the new basketball and volleyball practice facility. The $35 million, 52,000-square-foot project will support the daily operations of UTSA’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs.
The facility features tilt-wall construction — a method in which concrete wall panels are poured on site and then lifted into place once cured. After completing the groundwork, the team reached this milestone in under three weeks. All 33 tilt-wall panels are now standing, with the largest panel weighing 117,000 pounds and measuring 30 feet wide by 43 feet tall. The crane used for the lifts weighed over 700,000 pounds.
“Reaching this milestone is a reflection of the dedication and collaboration exhibited by the entire project team, including UTSA and our trade partners,” said Matt McCaffrey, Vice President and Account Manager with Skanska USA Building San Antonio. “We are grateful for the trust UTSA has placed in us to deliver this project and look forward to bringing this state-of-the-art facility to life for Roadrunner Athletics.”
The two-story training facility for UTSA’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs will house the daily operations. This space will provide all the practice amenities associated with NCAA Division I basketball and volleyball, including each program having its own practice court, team locker room with shower space, film review room, team lounge area, and office space for coaching staff. Shared amenities will include strength and conditioning areas, hydrotherapy spaces, and equipment and laundry rooms.
