Rhode Island DOT Completes Latest Resurfacing Project for Route 6

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Director Peter Alviti, Jr. gathered with local and state leaders to celebrate the completion of resurfacing on another segment of deteriorated Route 6 in western Rhode Island. This latest segment, about 3.5 miles from Route 101 to Route 102 in Scituate, was completed on time and approximately $250,000 under budget.

"The RhodeWorks program has directed hundreds of millions of dollars toward badly needed bridge and road repair projects and Route 6 stood out as being one of the worst — a road we had to visit often to keep it passable and a source of constant headaches for motorists," Alviti said.

This $8.1-million project was the latest in a series of projects to resurface Route 6 and Route 6A in Johnston and Scituate. In the last year RIDOT also paved Route 6A (Hartford Avenue) from Killingly Street to Atwood Avenue in Johnston; Route 6 from I-295 in Johnston to Danielson Pike in Scituate; Route 6 from Danielson Pike to Route 101 in Scituate; Route 101, from Route 6 to Route 102 in Scituate; and Rockland Road from Central Pike to Danielson Pike in Scituate. The combined investment of all segments was $24.4 million.

RIDOT has more projects planned for Route 6 in the coming years. These include an intersection safety improvement project starting in late 2020/early 2021 to upgrade traffic signals and make other improvements at two locations in Scituate (Route 6 and Elmdale Road and Route 6 and Route 102) and two locations in Foster (Route 6 and Route 94 and Route 6 and Cucumber Hill Road).

Approximately two years after those improvements are done, in 2024, RIDOT will resurface the Foster section of Route 6 from Route 102 to the Connecticut border. Also in Scituate, RIDOT will replace the last remaining stretch of old concrete roadway starting in 2020 on Danielson Pike from just west of Route 116 to Route 102. The combined value of these future investments is $15.7 million.

These projects are made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development and create jobs. Learn more at ridot.net/RhodeWorks.
