ACEC/MA Announces Bronze Excellence Award Winners for 2023

BOSTON, MA — The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named the 2023 Bronze Engineering Excellence Award winners. The top winners at the state level proceed to the national competition administered by the American Council of Engineering Companies in Washington, D.C., where they will compete for, among other awards, the national Grand Conceptor Award.

Bronze ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Award winners:

  • Arup US, Inc. for the Brookville Electric Vehicle Bus Depot serving Montgomery County Maryland. Client AlphaStruxure brought on Arup US, Inc. to help meet the county’s goal for zero carbon emissions and a fully electric fleet by 2035. The new depot supports 70 buses, and the microgrid will eventually eliminate over 160,000 metric tons of GHGs.
  • Arup US, Inc. for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Graduate Tower at Site 4. The 29-story Graduate Tower, at 300 feet and housing 454 residential units, is currently the tallest building in Cambridge. The project achieved LEED Gold certification.
  • Beals and Thomas for The Country Club Pond Dredging and U.S. Open Preparations. Beals and Thomas was able to provide strategic guidance and complete services so that the desired water quality improvement program was initiated in concert with the Open.
  • CDR Maguire, Inc. for the West Oxbow Road over Wilder Brook Bridge Replacement Projects. For the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) they provided a structural, highway, and traffic design that is cost effective, aesthetically appealing, sustainable, and best serves the local community,
  • Dewberry for the Bridge Replacement of Evergreen Road over Mason Brook for client MassDOT.
  • Dewberry for the city-wide Sewer Separation Master Plan for the City of Chelsea. With the Master Plan as a resource, the city can strategically plan for future development and environmental impacts including wastewater overflows and increased flooding due to climate change.
  • Environmental Partners Group for Elevating Resilience; Town of Lexington Leverages Green Infrastructure for Stormwater Solutions. Environmental Partners’ naturalized approach to blend gray and green infrastructure components addressed the drainage challenges while providing an elevated aesthetic to the residential area through use of a vegetated retaining wall and restoration of the wetland areas along the drainage easement.
  • Fitzemeyer & Tocci Associates, Inc. for the engineering and construction administration for the fast paced design and construction of BAE Systems Manchester - Engineering & Production Facility.
  • Fitzemeyer & Tocci Associates, Inc. for Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Kaven Hall. The building has historical significance dating back to its namesake Moses Kaven, class of 1865. Modernizations to ventilation, occupant comfort, accessibility, and aesthetics were achieved while maintaining the historical integrity of the building.
  • Gannett Fleming provided engineering design services to replace the existing Umpachene Falls Road over Konkapot River Bridge in the Town of New Marlborough. Originally built in 1950, the existing, single-span structure was rated as structurally deficient and closed to vehicular traffic in April 2012. Now in accordance with MassDOT’s Bridge Design Guide, the new bridge provides safe passage for vehicles and pedestrians, all while maintaining the historic aesthetic appeal of the original structure.
  • Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. with client MassDOT reconstructed the failed railroad embankment and restored rail service to the Cape Main Line MP 67.0 in 27 days. The team committed to a design that focused on restoring rail service while also looking at long term needs to prevent a recurrence, protect sensitive wetland resources, and ensure the viability of the cranberry bog.
  • Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. Implementation of the Hyannis Master Plan. The Jacobs team and client MassDOT expanded the yard for passenger and freight service and to integrate the bus service with the train service.
  • Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc working with Engleberth Construction, Inc. on the Terminal Integration Project for Burlington International Airport.
  • Nitsch Engineering for the Gardner Street Roadway Reconstruction Project. Working with the City of Worcester to connect Table Talk Pies’ existing freezer facility to their new oven facility, Nitsch Engineering lowered Gardner Street underneath an active CSX bridge to provide adequate clearance for trucks.
  • Nitsch Engineering’s Stormwater Improvement Project for Tufts University successfully manages stormwater from a district scale improving sustainability and resilience, saving time and money.
  • TranSystems working with MassDOT and the City of Fall River to prepare preliminary design for a transformation of the Taunton River Waterfront with Route 79/Davol Street Improvements.
  • VHB working with MassDOT completed the Spy Pond Dredge and Stormwater Improvements project which consisted of a feasibility study and subsequent design and permitting to dredge 625 cubic yards of contaminated sediment and upgrade the drainage system that discharges to Spy Pond, which ultimately restored recreational access to the pond.
  • Waterfield Design Group, Inc. was recognized for the Boon Street Presbyterian Church Reconstruction and Adaptive Reuse project. Creative engineering and architectural design are utilized to salvage and restore this historic landmark property.
  • Woodard & Curran was retained by the Town of Mansfield to design the Cate Spring Well PFAS Treatment System.
