Gilbane Building Company Awarded Elbridge Gerry Elementary School Project
The new facility will accommodate approximately 450 students in grades kindergarten through third and will consolidate three elementary schools in the district under one roof. The project involves the immediate abatement and demolition of two existing school structures and blasting of more than 10,000 CY of ledge to make room for the new school structure.
“We’re thrilled to be part of this incredible team and look forward to delivering this new school to the Town of Marblehead,” said Mike O’Brien, Vice President and Business Unit Leader for Gilbane in Massachusetts. “Our team brings vast experience in building 21st century school facilities in the state, and we’re looking forward to partnering with the Marblehead community on this project.”
Settled in 1629, Marblehead is a historic town on the north shore of Massachusetts, famous for its role as a leader in colonial fishing and shipping. Many roadways in the town are still quite narrow and indirect, and its neighborhoods densely clustered. The new Elbridge Gerry School is situated tightly among such a neighborhood. Recognizing this fact, the Gilbane team developed a detailed approach to minimizing the effect of disruptive construction activities in a tightly settled area, as well as a communication plan that will keep the Marblehead community informed and prepared as the project progresses.
Designed by Raymond Design Associates, Inc., with Leftfield serving as owner’s project manager, the Elbridge Gerry Elementary School project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2021.
