ACEC/MA Announces Woodard & Curran as Bronze Winner in Engineering Excellence

QUINCY, MA — The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) names Woodard & Curran as a winner of their 2020 Bronze Engineering Excellence Award for their work on the Town Brook relocation in Quincy, Massachusetts.

The 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards were recently announced and will be celebrated at the 2021 ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala. The awards celebrate innovation, ingenuity, and excellence in engineering achievement.

The Town Brook relocation unlocks the potential redevelopment of 14 acres of underutilized land in downtown Quincy. It includes new green infrastructure that improves water quality and helps restore spawning habitat for native fish species.

To accomplish it, Quincy established a unique public-private partnership that allowed significant infrastructure upgrades to be completed by a private developer. The city’s program manager, Woodard & Curran, then collaborated closely with the developer to design and construct the infrastructure on the same site as the construction of a over 150-unit apartment building. Ultimately, the project advances Quincy’s downtown revitalization efforts and economic development.

Woodard & Curran handled a wide range of water and environmental issues — solving complex problems with creativity and tenacity. They are an integrated engineering, science, and operations company. Privately held and steadily growing, they serve public and private clients locally and nationwide.

“The Engineering Excellence Awards program recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate a high degree of achievement, value, and ingenuity,” said Jenn Howe, President of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts and Principal and Vice President at Symmes Maini & McKee Associates (SMMA). “Entrants are rated by an independent panel of judges from the architectural community, the construction industry, academia, the media, and the public sector on the basis of uniqueness and originality; future value to the profession and perception by the public; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of the client/owner’s need, including schedule and budget. We congratulate them and thank them for their contributions to improving the quality of our everyday lives.”

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts is the business association of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island engineering industry, representing over 120 independent engineering companies engaged in the development of transportation, environmental, industrial, and other infrastructure. Founded in 1960 and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, ACEC/MA is a member organization of the American Council of Engineering Companies based in Washington, D.C. ACEC is a national federation of 51 state and regional organizations.
