CLEAR LAKE, TX — Gilbane Building joined HCA Healthcare and project partners to celebrate the groundbreaking of the HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake Expansion project, a major investment in health care infrastructure for the Bay Area community.
More than 150 people were in attendance, including HCA division leaders, board members, hospital staff, and local community representatives. Todd Calia, Chief Executive Officer of HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, addressed the crowd.
“I feel grateful to be a part of this moment in time, I feel honored to lead the team that’s making this happen, and I feel blessed to call this community ours,” he said. “This much-needed project will add an additional 54 beds, taking us to a total of 586, and expand our footprint by more than 132,000 square feet.”
Originally constructed in 1970, HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake serves the growing Bay Area region, including Webster and surrounding communities. Fueled by residential, retail, and high-tech development, the area’s population growth has increased demand for modernized facilities and expanded services.

The expansion includes both vertical and horizontal additions to the existing hospital campus, designed to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. The three-story vertical expansion will accommodate new ICU rooms, labor and delivery suites, and additional patient beds, while the horizontal expansion will support women’s services and streamline logistics with a modern loading dock. Gilbane Building is leveraging advanced prefabrication methods including exterior panels, bathroom pods, headwalls, and footwalls, to accelerate construction and minimize disruption to hospital operations. These enhancements will help HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake meet the growing health care demands of the Bay Area with modern and resilient infrastructure.
