EPA Recognizes Port of Corpus Christi Among Nation’s Leading Green Power Users

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The Port of Corpus Christi joins the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Partnership as part of its ongoing commitment to the port’s leadership role as an environmental steward in the Coastal Bend. The EPA’s Green Power Partnership seeks to reduce the negative health impacts of air emissions through the use of renewable energy.

The close of 2020 marked the Port of Corpus Christi’s third consecutive year operating on 100 percent renewable energy. In 2020, the port purchased green energy credits totaling 8,485,288 kWh from wind energy sources. The milestone marks significant progress since 2017, when nearly half of all port energy consumption was purchased from renewable energy sources.

“The Port of Corpus Christi is honored to join the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership to further our industry’s mission of being environmentally responsible in all of our undertakings,” said Sean Strawbridge, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Corpus Christi. “The port has long made environmental stewardship a focus."

According to the EPA, the Port of Corpus Christi’s green power usage is equivalent to the electricity use of nearly 800 American homes on an annual basis. In addition, the port has recycled more than 1 million pounds or materials since 2005, remains proactive with air monitoring, and recently used federal grant funds to purchase a solar-powered floating skimmer to keep trash from flowing into Corpus Christi Bay during periods of heavy rainfall.

“The Port of Corpus Christi and its industry partners have been proactive in ensuring our region’s air quality attainment is never put in jeopardy, and joining the Green Power Partnership reinforces our commitment to protecting that status,” said Charles W. Zahn, Chairman of the Port of Corpus Christi Commission. “We look forward to expanding our efforts as a leader in environmental stewardship for the Coastal Bend, the state of Texas, and our nation."
