In the past two years there have been 16 reported bridge strikes at this location. Once reconstruction is complete, the height of the new bridge will be 16 feet six inches, over two feet higher than its previous height of 14 feet four inches.
Crews began prep work removing utilities from the bridge in January of this year. Crews closed Waco St. Bridge at I-10 in early February of this year. The bridge will not reopen until the completion of the bridge reconstruction.
Motorists traveling eastbound and eastbound on I-10 will need to exit Waco St. and proceed onto the frontage road and enter the next available entrance ramp. Motorists should expect delays and it is recommended that motorists seek an alternate route during the closure.
The project will also upgrade the existing sidewalks from four feet to eight feet and the existing bike lane from four feet to five feet. The project is scheduled for completion December 2020 but there is an incentive for early completion.
