SAN ANTONIO, TX — Sundt Construction, in a joint venture with Davila Construction, received a 2026 Baldwin Group Build America Merit Award from the Associated General Contractors of America in the environmental enhancement category for the San Pedro Creek Culture Park in San Antonio, Texas.
The project transformed 2.25 miles of urban waterway into a flood control system designed to reduce flood risk and restore ecological function. The improvements introduced vibrant public spaces, including a linear park with pedestrian paseos, plazas, and public art reflecting more than 300 years of San Antonio’s cultural heritage.
“From day one, this effort required us to navigate complex challenges while staying closely aligned with our partners and the community,” said Jeff Williamson, President of Sundt’s Transportation Group. “The result strengthens flood resilience while creating a lasting public space that reflects the character of San Antonio.”
Delivered in partnership with the San Antonio River Authority and HDR, the $241 million, multiphase project removed surrounding properties from the 100-year floodplain while reestablishing the natural creek system. The restoration has already supported the return of native fish and mollusk species not seen in the watershed for decades.
Construction required navigating active flood conditions, tight urban constraints, and the preservation of historic resources, including the discovery and integration of a 19th-century African Methodist Episcopal church site into the final design.
