San Antonio Unveils Transformed San Pedro Creek Culture Park

SAN ANTONIO, TX — San Antonio, Texas, celebrated a major milestone with the completion of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park, an infrastructure and cultural project delivered by the Sundt/Davila joint venture team for the San Antonio River Authority. The revitalized 2-mile stretch of creek in the city’s core now serves as a linear park — enhancing flood protection, restoring natural ecosystems, and offering a celebration of the region’s cultural heritage through public art and community spaces.

“This project was about more than construction. It was about giving a historic space back to the people of San Antonio,” said Chad Yount, Texas Operations Manager for Sundt Construction. “Our team is proud to have created a space that celebrates culture, invites community, and respects the deep history of this site.”

The San Pedro Creek project began in 2016 and was the first construction manager at risk project for the San Antonio River Authority. A central goal of the multi-phase initiative was comprehensive flood mitigation. The creek was widened and deepened to safely convey stormwater and remove adjacent properties from the 100-year floodplain. This work enhances public safety, protects surrounding infrastructure, and strengthens the resilience of downtown San Antonio against severe weather events.

In addition to its flood control benefits, the project restored the creek’s natural habitat and stimulated new economic activity in the area.

Throughout construction, the project team prioritized the site’s cultural and archaeological significance. Among the discoveries was the original worship space of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church. The site was carefully excavated in collaboration with local historical and archaeological experts, and the discovery has been integrated into the park’s design.

“The completion of San Pedro Creek Culture Park is a testament to the power of collaboration and vision,” said Derek Boese, General Manager of the San Antonio River Authority. “This creek is a symbol of our commitment to creating safe, clean, and enjoyable creeks for San Antonio. We’ve transformed this waterway into a place where people can connect with nature, learn about history, and enjoy the beauty of our city.”

Earlier phases of the project earned national recognition, including the Associated General Contractors Build America Award and a national award from the American Public Works Association. Sundt delivered the first phase in 2018, in time for San Antonio’s 300th anniversary.
