LINCOLN, NE — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has awarded a pre-construction services contract to Hawkins Construction Co. as part of its plan to replace the aging Dodge Street/Saddle Creek Road Overpass in Omaha, Nebraska’s Midtown area.
The Saddle Creek Bridge Project is utilizing the construction manager/general contractor collaborative delivery process — an alternative delivery method designed to facilitate greater public-private teamwork and risk mitigation while improving cost and schedule certainty.
Planning for the project began months ago and included outreach to the construction industry, in which NDOT provided details of the delivery method. NDOT received proposals from five interested parties. After an evaluation and interviews, the agency identified Hawkins Construction Co. as the highest-rated proposer.
The existing overpass structure — constructed in the 1930s — will be replaced to maintain infrastructure integrity and improve access to a heavily traveled region of Omaha that is seeing millions of dollars in reinvestment and new development.
“Nebraska is using innovative ways to modernize its transportation network while adding value for taxpayers,” NDOT Director Vicki Kramer said. “Under Governor [Jim] Pillen’s leadership, our agency is working hard to streamline the delivery of transportation projects. This project showcases NDOT’s improved collaboration with industry partners, which will benefit both drivers and communities.”
