Pavement Completed on Two Segments of Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa Project

BLUE SPRINGS, MO — Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) have completed the third lane of travel in each direction of I-70, as well as the replacement of the existing pavement, in two of the five project segments (totaling 8 completed miles) of the 25-mile Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa project.

In Segment 1 on the western end of the project limits, spanning from Blue Springs to Grain Valley (mile markers 20 through 24), all three lanes of I-70 have opened to traffic in each direction. This completed work provides the first glimpse as to what the project, as well as the entire 200-mile corridor will look like statewide when complete. While all three lanes have opened, crews are still working to complete a few final items within the work zone and motorists may encounter overnight single lane closures throughout the remainder of the project.

In Segment 5 on the eastern end of the project limits, spanning from Route MO to Route H in Lafayette County (mile markers 41 through 45), the pavement work is complete but will remain striped for two lanes in the area until crews have completed the addition of third lane and pavement replacement in the connecting segments, anticipated by the end of 2028. Keeping Segment 5 in this configuration will allow for a smoother driving experience for motorists and will help to prevent potential traffic backups in the area.

Crews with the project will now focus on completing the addition of the third lane, replacement of the existing I-70 pavement, and other planned improvements in the remaining three project segments between Grain Valley and Route M/O. The project is anticipated to be completed by late 2028.

Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa is the third project in MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program and will add a third lane of travel in each direction to I-70 from just west of MO Route 7 in Blue Springs to approximately MO Route H. The project also includes interchange improvements at Route D in Bates City and at MO Route 131 in Odessa. The project was awarded in spring 2025 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028.

Missouri’s fiscal year 2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
