HATTIESBURG, MS — The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues making improvements to highways in south Mississippi.

“Dozens of projects are moving forward throughout southeast Mississippi, and each one of them is geared toward improving safety and increasing Mississippians’ quality of life,” said Commissioner Tom King, Southern Transportation District.

Lottery Funded Projects Throughout the District
In Jackson County, a $4.8-million overlay project is underway on U.S. Highway 90. The project stretches seven miles from State Route 57 to the West Pascagoula River Bridge. Work to clean and make repairs to the existing drainage culverts continues. This project was awarded to Warren Paving Inc., of Hattiesburg, and is expected to wrap up early 2022.

In Jasper County, a $3.3-million overlay project of State Route 503 is expected to begin soon. This project stretches 12 miles from State Route 528 to the Newton County line. The contract was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders, LLC, of Laurel. Work is expected to be complete summer 2022.

In Harrison County, a $2.6-million mill and overlay of U.S. Highway 49 was awarded to Warren Paving, Inc. This project stretches from north of Cresote Road to north of O’Neal Road.

Interchange Construction on Interstate 59 at State Route 42 in Forrest County
Work on an interchange construction project on Interstate 59 at State Route 42 in Forrest County is nearing completion. Crews are moving forward with work on the westbound SR 42 to southbound I-59 loop ramp. This $24.2-million contract was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders, LLC.
Safety Improvement Project on U.S. Highway 49 in Forrest County
Work on a safety improvement project on U.S. 49 continues in Forrest County. Crews continue grading work in the median and southbound outside shoulder. Southbound traffic has been shifted to the median in several locations to allow for reconstruction of the existing southbound lanes to remove steep vertical curves. Work on drainage culverts is underway as well as the construction of retaining walls. This project was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, of Columbia, and is expected to be completed fall 2022.
Mill and Overlay on Interstate 59 in Forrest County
A mill and overlay project is underway on I-59 from U.S. Highway 98 east seven miles to the Forrest/Lamar County line. Currently, placement of the open-graded friction course is near completion. A supplemental agreement has been executed to add traffic signals and widen the off-ramps at the U.S. Highway 11 interchange. This $11-million project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders, LLC. Work is expected to be complete early 2022.
Intersection Improvements on U.S. Highway 84 in Wayne County
A project to improve the intersection on U.S. Highway 84 at Reservoir Road/Magnolia Hill Road and State Route 184 is underway in Wayne County. Currently, crews are placing drainage structures and moving dirt to form the roadbed. This $4-million project was awarded to R & J Construction Company, Inc., of Laurel. Work is expected to wrap up summer 2022.
Reconstruction Project on U.S. Highway 11 in Pearl River County
Work on a reconstruction project that stretches from Cayten Street to Lakeshore Drive on U.S. 11 continues in Pearl River County. Crews have shifted traffic to the next phase and started construction on a new median. This work is part of phase one, which is expected to be completed fall 2022. This $14.4-million project was awarded to Barriere Construction Company, LLC, of Franklinton, Louisiana.

The second phase will include the construction of a new bridge over the East Hobolochitto Creek and is currently scheduled for construction beginning in 2023. The new bridge will have shoulders and include a protected sidewalk with a concrete barrier for pedestrians. The entire project is estimated to be completed in 2025.

Bridge Projects Happening Throughout Southeast Mississippi
A bridge rehabilitation project on the Fort Bayou drawbridge on SR 609 in Jackson County is nearing completion. Work to renovate the bridge tender house is nearly complete along with final completion work to the draw span. Replacement of the timber fender system remains underway. This $20-million project was awarded to C.E.C., Inc., of Lafayette, Lousiana.

A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 49 over Flat Branch in Harrison County. Currently, crews continue work on the southbound bridge. This $5.1-million project was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction. Work is expected to be complete early 2022.

A bridge rehabilitation project is underway on the Wilkes Drawbridge located on State Route 605 over Industrial Waterway in Harrison County. Currently, crews are performing electrical work and replacing windows in the drawbridge house. This $22-million project was awarded to C.E.C., Inc. Work is expected to wrap up summer 2022.

A bridge preservation project on U.S. 49 over the Biloxi Bridge continues in Harrison County. Earthwork operations underneath and around the bridge continues. Crews are currently placing rip rap underneath the bridge. This $1.6-million project was awarded to Gibson & Associates, Inc., of Texas.

A bridge preservation project on Interstate 10 over the Tchoutacabouffa River in Harrison County is nearing completion. This $1.8-million project was awarded to Gibson & Associates, Inc., and is slated to be complete early 2022.

A bridge preservation project on State Route 617 over the CSX Railroad is moving forward in Jackson County. Crews are currently working to resurface the deck. This $3-million project was awarded to Gibson & Associates, Inc., and is slated to be complete spring 2022.
