YAZOO CITY, MS — Commissioner Willie Simmons, Central Transportation District, announces updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) maintenance projects in western Mississippi.
Cable Barrier Installation on Interstate 55
The installation of median cable barrier on I-55 in Carroll, Copiah, and Holmes counties is nearing completion. The $4.7-million project was awarded to Simmons Erosion Control, Inc.. Current operations include the installation of concrete drainage ditches and a cable system. Work is expected to be completed early 2021.Interstate 20 Frontage Road Extension in Warren County
A project to extend the existing south Frontage Road from Old Highway 27 to U.S. Highway 80 in Warren County remains underway. The $19.9-million contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc.. Additionally, five bridges on I-20 within the Vicksburg city limits were identified as needing new bridge railing and other minor repairs. Work began in the fall of 2019 and is expected to be completed spring 2023.I-55 Bridge Preservation in Copiah County
Four bridges on I-55 over State Route 27 and State Route 28 in Copiah County are currently being repaired. Key, LLC, was awarded the $755,000 project. Work began in July 2020 and is on track to be completed early 2021.State Route 1 Cross Drain Replacements in Sharkey County
The replacement of three cross drains on SR 1 between U.S. Highway 61 and Black Bayou Road in Sharkey County was recently completed. The $113,000 contract was awarded to Hemphill Construction Company.I-20 Sign Truss Replacement in Warren County
Construction of a sign truss over I-20 in Vicksburg is set to begin early 2021. The original truss was struck by a car hauler in September, forcing MDOT crews to completely remove the damaged truss. The $462,000 contract was awarded to Atwood Fence Company. Construction is expected to be complete by summer 2021.U.S. Highway 82 Overlay in Washington County
An overlay of approximately five miles of U.S. 82 from Hughes Street to Woodlawn Drive in Greenville is underway. Crews are currently repairing base failures before paving mainline roadway. The contractor for this $3.5-million project is APAC-Mississippi, Inc. Work is on track to be completed spring 2021.Traffic Signal Improvements on U.S. 82 and SR 1 in Greenville
Webster Electric Company, Inc. was awarded a $5.5-million project to upgrade traffic signals along the U.S. 82 and SR 1 corridors. Work includes new roadway striping along with the installation of fiber optic cable for the new systems and new traffic signs. Work is underway on the U.S. 82 signals, and the project is expected to be completed summer 2021.U.S. Highway 49W Overlay in Yazoo County
