MMR Offers Employees Oral Cancer Screenings

BATON ROUGE, LA — MMR offered oral cancer screenings and tobacco cessation counseling to their employees at the Baton Rouge headquarters through the partnership with Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center’s Prevention on the Go – Workplace Program.

“The mental and physical health of my team is top priority, and I am committed to providing exceptional benefits and cutting-edge health and wellness programs so that employees can seek the best care in a convenient and affordable way,” said MMR President/CEO James B. Rutland.

Robert Peden, an otolaryngologist (head and neck surgeon) with the cancer center, performed oral cancer exams for over 50 MMR employees. Of those who received exams, 68 percent had never been screened for oral cancer. Mary Bird Perkins found several abnormal findings and will follow up with each of them to ensure they receive recommended care.

In addition, employees had the opportunity to be counseled by a medical professional and receive smoking cessation support. Ten MMR employees who use tobacco visited with the specialist and those who are interested in quitting tobacco use will receive further counseling. Employees who participated received giveaways and were entered into a drawing to win gift cards and prizes.

The Prevention on the Go – Workplace Program brings early detection, prevention, education and screenings to company work sites at no charge to the employee. In 2018, MMR was one of the first companies to participate in the program, and now offers screenings for oral, skin and breast cancers. MMR will extend the service to its other Louisiana-based offices in the new year.

MMR’s involvement with the Prevention on the Go – Workplace Program is one of the ways the company cares for employees’ health and wellness in addition to offering an on-site gym with bootcamp classes, paid or discounted gym memberships, telemedicine and more. In addition, MMR pays 100 percent of its employees (and their covered dependents) monthly healthcare premiums after seven years of employment.

MMR is in the instrumentation and electrical construction, maintenance and technical services industry. Under the leadership of President and CEO Rutland, MMR continues to grow both regionally and nationally with 30 branch offices throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Trinidad, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panamá.
