NEWTON, MS — Commissioner Dick Hall, Chair, Mississippi Transportation Commission, announces updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in central Mississippi.

Active and Upcoming Improvement Projects in Hinds County

A project is being planned to rehabilitate the Lynch Creek Bridge on I-20 in Hinds County. The project calls for the partial removal and replacement of both the eastbound and westbound bridge decks.

Improvements are currently underway at the current I-20 interchange at Norrell Road. The project will provide new geometry for the interchange, and it will re-align and widen the frontage roads and local roads.

All major bridge construction on Continental Parkway is complete. The bridge on I-20 eastbound has been widened to the north and south sides. Crews are also paving the east and west sides of the bridge. Dirt work on the south ramp is underway, and crews anticipate wrapping up this work during spring 2020.

Work to overlay approximately 10 miles of I-55 from the Copiah County Line to Byram is underway. The project includes pressure grouting, joint repair, punch-outs and guardrail installation. Efforts to clean and seal concrete joints are underway, and the project is on track to be completed by fall 2020.

Crews are nearing completion on milling and paving SR 18 from Raymond to I-20. The additional turn lane at Siwell Road is complete but not open to traffic due to striping requirements. Remaining construction includes trench widening of the inside shoulders, guardrail removal and replacement and radar detection installation.

Safety Projects Underway in Madison and Rankin Counties

In Rankin County, the reconstruction and widening of approximately 7.5 miles of Highway 49 is underway. Once Phase II is complete, the existing concrete pavement and the median will be removed. Some Phase III work is already underway in the median. Phase IV, the final phase of the project, will include paving and striping work. Once complete, there will be three travel lanes and a shoulder in each direction.

A project to mill and overlay approximately two miles of SR 475 from SR 468 to I-20 in Rankin County continues moving forward. The project will include replacing the existing detection loops with traffic signal radar detection. The signal detection, milling and overlaying work is complete. Remaining efforts include final striping, and the project remains on track to be complete by fall 2019.

Crews are making progress on a project to widen the I-55 northbound bridge over the I-220 ramp in Madison County. The project will provide an additional lane from Countyline Road to the Natchez Trace exit ramp. Multiple interchange modifications will be made to accommodate the new lane.

Work on the drill shafts, columns and caps for the bridge widening has been completed. Dirt work has been completed to the outside of the existing auxiliary lane. Work started in October 2018 and is expected to be complete by early summer 2020.

Pavement Rehabilitation Projects Continue in Central Mississippi

In Scott County, the milling and overlaying of approximately two miles of Highway 80 from the three-lane section to Eastgate Circle is underway. The project includes the repairing of failed areas, rumble strip installation and replacement of guardrail. Crews will continue to mill, level and pave the mainline road before finishing work this fall.

In Lauderdale County, a project to mill and overlay approximately 11 miles of Highway 11 from Russell to the Alabama state line began during the summer. Crews have completed cleaning and filling concrete joints and are working to widen the existing roadway. The project is on track to be completed by early summer 2020.

A project to mill and overlay approximately six miles of I-20/59 through Meridian remains underway. In addition to repairing several failed areas, crews will update traffic signal hardware and replace guardrail on the mainline interstate route of I-20/59 from the 65th Avenue bridge to US 45.

The project also includes the paving of the north and south frontage roads, interchange ramps, 29th Avenue and 49th Avenue crossing routes. Work began in April 2019 and is expected to be completed by early summer 2020.
