HAMPSTEAD, NC — The North Carolina Department of Transportation awarded a contract for the final segment of Hampstead Bypass to increase connection and improve traffic flow in New Hanover and Pender counties.
The contract was awarded to S.T. Wooten Corporation for $182 million to construct about 7 miles of roadway to complete the final segment of the Hampstead Bypass. Work will include grading, drainage, paving, and structures.
This segment extends from N.C. 140 (formerly known as the U.S. 17 Wilmington Bypass) to N.C. 210 and will complete the nearly 13-mile bypass located on the U.S. 17 corridor. Construction on this portion is expected to be completed in 2030.
“The Hampstead Bypass project remains a top priority for the department and is crucial for the continued growth of the region. This is a huge milestone as we work toward the completion of the bypass,” said Trevor Carroll, Division 3 Engineer.
The other half of the project, from N.C. 210 to north of Hampstead, is under construction and is anticipated to be completed in late 2027.
