New Safe and Efficient Infrastructure Coming to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC — Global design firm Stantec, along with consultants Alta Planning + Design and SeamonWhiteside, have completed the master plan for Mount Pleasant Way in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, which has been approved by the town council. The plan includes designs to provide safe, viable, and functional connections to parks, schools, and other community destinations.

“The town staff was thrilled to work with Stantec, Alta Planning + Design, and SeamonWhiteside on the Mount Pleasant Way master plan. It was very exciting to see the document take shape and come to fruition after years of the town conceptualizing this concept through the 2018 Comprehensive Plan,” said James Aton, Operations Division Chief for the Town of Mount Pleasant. “Stantec, Alta Planning + Design, and SeamonWhiteside brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the master plan and were very responsive to staff input, suggestions, and direction. They were innovative in adapting to the challenges presented by COVID moving the project almost entirely virtual for both internal meetings and public outreach.”

The Mount Pleasant Way project will serve as a recreational resource for residents of all ages and abilities, with connections to existing parks, trails, and the area’s scenic natural surroundings. It will create a multi-modal transportation corridor that connects bicyclists and pedestrians to the town centers, places of employment, schools, and libraries. The project will also link to the larger East Coast Greenway trail system, which links coastal cities from Maine to Florida. Locally the Mount Pleasant Way will provide connections to the Battery2Beach bikeway.

“Connecting communities is one of our firm’s primary missions, and we’re honored to have led the creation of this master plan,” said Thomas Hammerberg, Project Manager at Stantec. “The projects under this plan will transform the town’s transportation infrastructure and improve the lives of residents for generations to come.”

The guiding principle of the plan is to connect the community through active living, nature, history, and culture along the Mount Pleasant Way. The trail and bikeway design creates a cohesive and comfortable experience for users of all ability levels. Trailheads and rest areas will enhance the user’s trail experience, creating walkable areas that de-emphasize the car and encourage people to slow down, visit more frequently, and stay longer. New wayfinding and interpretive signage will help orient trail users and educate them about their surroundings. The plan also includes plans for updated safety features, including improved roadway and driveway crossings to reduce the risk of pedestrian and cyclist injury.
