DURHAM, NC –– Skanska announces the completion of Virginia State University’s (VSU) Alfred W. Harris Academic Commons, a facility uniting the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Education. The 175,000-square-foot, space now serves as a central hub for student activities and academics.
“This project is an investment for the next generation of scholars,” said Mark Balling, Executive Vice President responsible for Skanska’s Mid-Atlantic building operations. “We are honored to have partnered with VSU on this project, a school rich in history, to bring their vision to life in a way that reflects the institution’s roots and highlights their standing as an academic leader.”
The Academic Commons features spaces that cover a variety of departments, including media and broadcast laboratories, multiple classrooms, dedicated spaces for ceramic labs and art studios, a black box theatre, and scene shop. The facility also includes an elevated running track, six basketball courts, and a natatorium with a six-lane pool spanning 25 yards, complete with three-meter diving boards.
The completion of the Academic Commons facility, now the largest building ever constructed on the VSU Campus, marks a significant milestone in VSU’s development.
