Goodbarn succeeds Tim Weander, who retired after 40 years of service to NDOT. Goodbarn served as the District 1 Engineer for the past 13 years. Prior to that, he served in a variety of capacities in District 2, including Engineer/Project Manager, Assistant Construction Engineer, and three years as an Engineer in District 4 in central Nebraska.
“I look forward to returning to District 2 as the District Engineer,” Goodbarn said. “I am grateful for the opportunities and all the work we accomplished for the citizens of District 1. The team in District 1 is solid, and their accomplishments will no doubt continue. Challenge and change are good motivators, and having the chance to continue to serve Nebraska’s eastern communities is something I look forward to.”
Varilek started his career at NDOT in 2006, serving for more than 15 years in the areas of pavement design, asset management, and construction. He assumed the role of Division Head of Materials & Research in November 2021.
“Working in the district has been a long-term goal of mine,” Varilek said. “My goal is to build upon the successes of Mr. Goodbarn and the District 1 staff to continue to provide the best possible transportation system for southeast Nebraska.”

NDOT Director Vicki Kramer said both Goodbarn and Varilek have the experience and knowledge to lead their districts. “We are incredibly grateful for Tim Weander’s service to not just NDOT but to the state of Nebraska and wish him nothing but the best in his retirement," she said. "I am confident that Tom Goodbarn and Brandon Varilek are ready to hit the ground running as they continue the tradition of leadership in project delivery and serving the people of Nebraska.”
