GRETNA, NE — The City of Gretna, Nebraska, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Gretna Community Complex, located at the intersection of Highway 6/31 and Jansen Drive, next to the Gretna Crossing Park Water Tower. City officials, project partners, and members of the community gathered to commemorate this milestone.
This event marks the beginning of a project that will become a vital hub for community engagement, growth, and civic connection. The over 60,000-square-foot facility will house City Hall, the Adult and Children’s Library, and a Community Center, bringing together essential civic services under one roof. The new complex will offer creative spaces, expanded programming, and more accessible resources for residents.
Driven by the city’s continued growth and the need for additional space in the current City Hall and Library, the Community Complex is designed to meet both present and future needs.
“This is going to really be in the heart of our community," Mayor Mike Evans said. "We’re not just building a building, we’re planting a seed for the next generation.”
The city has partnered with Project Control as the owners representative, Weitz Company as the construction manager at risk, and Sinclair Hille Architects as the lead for the design team. The Gretna Public Library Board and Foundation have played a key role in moving the project forward, with years of work culminating in the “Writing Our Story” Capital Campaign to support the new library.

“The new library project is not just about creating space; its about creating opportunity. Opportunity to enhance access to quality resources, strengthen technical literacy, and foster innovation in every corner of Gretna,“ said Rachel Cushing, President of the Library Board.
Ruff Grading is currently preparing the site, and full construction is scheduled to begin this summer. The Community Complex is expected to be completed by late 2026 or early 2027.
