KANSAS CITY, MO — Kansas City recently celebrated the grand opening of the $350 million KC Streetcar Main Street Extension. The project adds 3.5 miles to the existing streetcar line, connecting downtown with the Midtown corridor, including the Country Club Plaza district, ending at the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus.
Kansas City has one of the most successful modern streetcar systems in the United States, spurring billions of dollars in new investment and surpassing ridership projections since launching in 2016. The extension creates a central transit spine in the Midtown corridor with eight new level-boarding streetcars added to its fleet of six. It serves 15 new stops at eight locations, providing more accessibility and frequent service connecting Midtown visitors, workers, and residents with downtown and the River Market.
As lead consultant, HDR worked with the city, its streetcar authority, and with community stakeholders to plan and design the extension. The firm also helped the city secure $174 million in funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts Capital Investment Grant program.
“Modern streetcar projects are unique where multiple modes — cars, buses, trucks, and trains — come together in one shared right of way,” HDR Project Manager Nick Stadem said. “It is exciting to see how our collaboration and the trust we built during the extensive development, construction, and startup process resulted in delivering a complex and transformative project tailored to the community's needs. I am incredibly proud of our HDR team and thankful for the opportunity to serve the city and its residents.”
HDR also provided conceptual planning and environmental permitting; preliminary and final design of the extension and of an expanded maintenance facility; Federal Transit Administration Capital Investment Grant funding administration; architectural, right of way, and construction engineering services; and startup operations and testing services.
