Superior Construction Wins Construction Advancement Foundation's Contractor of the Year Award

LAKE COUNTY, IN — Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, announces it was named Heavy Civil/Highway Contractor of the Year by the Construction Advancement Foundation (CAF). Superior also received the CAF Heavy Civil/Highway Project of the Year Award for completing the Indiana Department of Transportation’s (INDOT) contract B-42498-A, which revamped a portion of the highly traveled Cline Avenue (State Road 912) in Lake County, Indiana. The announcement was made at the 2023 CAF/Northwest Indiana Business Roundtable (NWIBRT) Awards Banquet.

“We’re incredibly proud of our Midwest business unit for its commitment to excellence and safety, and we’re honored that the Construction Advancement Foundation has taken note of their efforts,” said Superior Construction CEO Nick Largura.

The CAF Project of the Year Award was presented to Superior Construction for their work on INDOT’s $8.5 million Cline Avenue Project, which required the contractor to place a silica fume overlay on top of four existing bridge decks in order to extend the service life of the bridges. The project’s scope included demolishing existing concrete mudwalls, end bents, reinforced bridge approach (RCBA), and roadway concrete, as well as installation of new semi-integral end bents and new bridge deck overlay, new RCBA, terminal joints, and HMA pavement.

Superior used 11,600 square yards of Micro Silica overlay for this project — 9,000 of which utilized a new Silica Fume, E5 Internal Cure mix. The two 4,000-square-yard pours on the Cline Avenue over Conrail Railroad were the largest in Indiana at the time of placement. Superior made safety the top priority during the project, which required 29,500 workforce hours and resulted in zero recordable safety incidents during construction.
