PORTAGE, IN — Superior Construction won seven awards at the annual joint Construction Advancement Foundation (CAF) and Northwest Indiana Business RoundTable (NWIBRT) Awards Banquet.
Superior won the Industrial Contractor of the Year award in recognition of its work across multiple projects, including the BP Whiting Refinery Coker Chute Replacement, for which it won Industrial Capital Project of the Year. The company also claimed the Heavy Civil/Highway Project of the Year Award for the Indiana Department of Transportation's Borman Expressway project. For that project, Superior became the first Northwest Indiana contractor to implement the Road Zipper movable barrier system to maintain safe distances between workers and high-speed traffic.
The Borman Expressway project addressed critical safety concerns on one of the region’s deadliest roadways, significantly improving conditions on a 10-mile stretch used by more than 204,000 vehicles daily. Using innovative approaches such as implementing longitudinal grooving to combat hydroplaning, Superior completed this challenging project with zero recordable incidents.
Superior received the NWIBRT Innovation Award for implementing HammerTech, a comprehensive safety intelligence software platform launched company-wide in January 2024. This technology revolutionized Superior’s approach to safety management and data tracking, resulting in significant improvements, including zero hand and finger injuries in 2024, down from 11 incidents the previous year.
“Our team members continuously push the boundaries of safety innovation by adopting technology, using targeted policies, and always looking out for each other,” said Bobby Greer, CSP, CHST, Superior’s Corporate HSE Director. “They refuse to take shortcuts when it comes to job site safety, and seeing their dedication recognized by CAF and NWIBRT is tremendous.”

Additionally, four Superior employees — Jaime Gomez, Stephen Wright, Gary Martin, and Ron Uylaki — won the NWIBRT Outstanding Craft Persons Award, given to professionals who prioritize job site safety.
Superior also received CAF’s Excellence in Professional Development Award for the second consecutive year, highlighting the company’s comprehensive professional development initiatives to enhance workers’ skills and career paths.
CAF award winners are selected by a third-party panel that reviews and audits finalists based on their application evaluation and overall contributions to Northwest Indiana’s safety culture.
