Indianapolis Department of Public Works Highlights $279M 2026 Construction Season

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Mayor Joe Hogsett joined the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) and the Indianapolis City-County Council at Chapel Rock Christian Church to discuss major right of way construction projects for the 2026 season. Indy DPW’s 2026 capital infrastructure budget calls for $279 million in investments to roads, sidewalks, trails, bridges, and stormwater infrastructure in Indianapolis, Indiana.

"This year, our Department of Public Works’ capital infrastructure budget is more than double what it was in 2017," Hogsett said. "This level of funding represents an ongoing commitment to delivering real, material improvements that keep our city moving.”

This year’s projects build upon Indy DPW’s ongoing work to maintain and improve roadways, bolster connectivity between neighborhoods, and create safe mobility for road users.

In 2026, Indianapolis' roads will see approximately $218 million in transportation improvements. Additionally, approximately $62 million stormwater improvements will help prevent flooding and allow for longer-lasting roadways.

“2026 is already shaping up to be an impactful year for right of way infrastructure in the city of Indianapolis, with significant projects happening from county line to county line,” Indy DPW Director Todd Wilson said.

At the event, the city highlighted upcoming construction along Girls School Road between Perimeter Road and 21st Street that will rehabilitate more than 22 lane miles of asphalt roadway. The project, estimated at $30.5 million, will also introduce a multi-purpose path on one side, and landscaped setbacks and tree lawns to help support improved stormwater drainage. The project was designed in line with the city’s Complete Streets policy.
