The Labor Shortage and Wheel Loader Tech

by: Chris Connolly, Volvo Construction Equipment

The construction labor shortage continues to cause job site hassles and project delays for many contractors. As seasoned veterans retire and the industry faces an influx of new, less-experienced machine operators, contractors must get their labor pool up to speed quickly to keep projects on track.

Looking specifically at wheel loaders, technology advancements and features in today’s machines can bridge the skills gap and help improve job site safety and efficiency.

Laying the Foundation With Operator Training

Wheel loaders are heavy-duty movers, designed for mobility and speed. Proper operator training, especially for new workers, is important to help ensure safe and efficient operation.

Some modern wheel loaders provide in-cab training that helps reinforce proper technique in real time. One example is the operator coaching app (part of Volvo Load Assist), which evaluates performance and displays immediate feedback on idling, braking, and gear selection. Features like this helps operators understand how their actions influence machine productivity, fuel efficiency, and wear so they work in a way that delivers optimum results.

Some wheel loaders also provide instant help messages or QR codes linked to instructional videos.

Automated Tasks Simplify the Learning Curve

Proper technique is critical when loading the bucket. Operators must know how to set the bucket level when entering, followed by a smooth actuation of the lift and tilt functions to maintain momentum pushing into the pile. When this isn’t performed properly, the machine can buck or even get stuck in the pile and spin the wheels.

Today’s wheel loaders have built-in technologies that can ease the effort required to load, reducing cycle times and supporting proper operator technique and machine performance.

Auto Bucket Fill
This technology is designed to sharpen an operator’s natural capabilities. Rather than offering full automation, it serves as an optimization partner for the repetitive task of pile rehandling. The loader drives into the material while the throttle, boom lift, and bucket curl are controlled autonomously, returning control to the operator once the bucket is filled. This delivers consistent, repeatable, and optimal results for operators of all skill levels.

Boom Kickout
This technology automatically stops the boom at a predetermined point during lifting. It can be customizable to any position and is especially helpful when operators are loading a truck at the same height for an extended period of time.

Return-to-Dig
Operators can return the bucket to the exact same position every time with this feature, setting a position the boom lowers to before filling the bucket at the pile.

Adjustable Lever Sensitivity
New operators can match their individual operating style and build confidence with this technology, which lets them choose the response level of the hydraulic levers to suit their preference.

Drivetrain Options
On Volvo loaders, for example, the OptiShift and Reverse By Braking system automatically drops engine rpms and applies standard service brakes during direction changes. This helps less-experienced operators make smoother transitions, reduce drivetrain strain, and save fuel.

Elevating Technique Through Intelligent Machine Control

Telematics and smart machine control technologies also help newer operators improve their technique. For instance, many machine control systems offer real-time onboard weighing and tire pressure monitoring.

These systems build operator confidence and help reduce machine and truck overloading, resulting in less equipment wear and a reduced risk of overweight fines.

Making Operators More Comfortable

Beyond new technologies and smart machine functions, intuitive wheel loader design and optimized maneuverability also help new operators get comfortable on the job site. After all, a more comfortable operator is often a more productive one.

Cabs that minimize internal noise and vibration create a better learning environment, allowing new operators to focus on the job at hand. Intuitive controls and in-cab screens also play an important role, while easy steering and maneuverability help prevent operator fatigue and repetitive motion injury risks.

Boost Productivity Faster

Modern wheel loader technologies can help contractors shorten the learning curve for new hires, boosting their productivity while keeping projects on schedule. These advanced features aren’t designed to replace operators, but to empower them to build skills and confidence faster.

Hiring hurdles aren’t going away overnight — but your deadlines aren’t moving either. By adopting smart, intuitive machine control and automated features, you can confidently bring new talent into your crew, helping operators of any skill level remain highly productive and efficient on the job site.
