Skanska Signs Additional Contract for Upgrades to University of Cincinnati Building

CINCINNATI, OH — The Ohio office of Skanska has signed an additional $94 million contract to perform additional upgrades to the University of Cincinnati’s (UC) historic Old Chemistry Building, marking another milestone in the growing relationship between Skanska and the region’s largest university.

The $159 million project encompasses a 63,000-square-foot renovation that includes new offices, open engineering research labs, classrooms, biology and chemistry teaching labs and collaboration spaces, and a 144,000-square-foot addition that includes new open-bay chemistry research labs with chemical storage, material support, and facility service spaces.

Work began in 2023 and is expected to reach phased occupancy starting in August 2025. The project marks the seventh collaboration between Skanska and UC, with more on the horizon.

“Skanska is honored for the continuing opportunities to partner with The University of Cincinnati on projects that are transforming the school’s campus,” said Chris Hopper, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Skanska.

In addition to the Old Chemistry Building project, Skanska managed the upgrade of UC's football locker room, resulting in a new locker room with 120 modern ventilated lockers, new finishes, and space for gametime meetings.

Skanska also managed the $750,000 upgrade of the university's sports broadcast production systems, along with the $85 million overhaul of the University of Cincinnati's Fifth Third Arena, a joint venture with Megen Construction Co. In addition, Skanska managed the $45.6 million renovation and expansion of the university’s former Lindner Hall College of Business — which is now the new home for the University of Cincinnati College of Law — and the $30 million renovation of the UC Teachers College.
