HDR, IPD Team Celebrate Opening of the Pavilion, Penn Medicine’s Vision for Advanced Care

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Designed by PennFIRST, an integrated project delivery team including HDR, Foster+Partners, BR+A, LF Driscoll, and Balfour Beatty in partnership with Penn Medicine’s clinical and facilities experts, the Pavilion at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is an inpatient facility and a new institutional and architectural icon for Penn Medicine on its academic medical campus in West Philadelphia.

“From the very first meeting, it was clear to the project team that the Pavilion was to be a blueprint for the ‘hospital of the future’, with a focus on patient experience and comfort,” said HDR Global Director for Health Hank Adams, AIA, FACHA. “The Pavilion is a transformational project in the health care design and construction industry and will continue to inspire for years to come.”

The PennFIRST team is a powerhouse of global design and construction expertise, and through deep collaboration through six years of co-location and teamwork, this IPD team has delivered one of the most advanced hospitals in the world.

“The collaborative nature of the IPD team and the close interaction with Penn Medicine’s leadership and staff created an atmosphere of innovation,” said HDR Director of Strategic Projects Daryl Bodewin, AIA, LEED BD+C. “The PennFIRST team was motivated by every challenge and worked together to always find a solution that would accomplish the mission.”

“From curbside to bedside, the Pavilion is designed with the human experience in mind. … spaces are bright, warm, and welcoming, with daylight and views that orient patients, visitors, and staff to their place on the campus,” said HDR Interior Design Principal Sara Gally, NCIDQ, EDAC.

The Pavilion is the first hospital in the U.S. of more than 1 million square feet to achieve LEED Gold Building Certification as well as the largest project in the world to achieve Gold or higher in LEED Healthcare v4, the latest version of the rating system.

“The team who designed, built, and now cares for patients in the Pavilion has shown us what the future of medicine looks like and ensured that Penn will be the epicenter of the very best care for generations to come,” said Kevin Mahoney, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, in a news release.

The new hospital includes a sculpture by Maya Lin, 504 conversion-ready patient rooms with interactive footwalls, and numerous advanced technologies.
