According to the AIANY, the Transportation + Infrastructure Design Excellence Awards celebrate projects “for their design, innovation, and impact, raising awareness about the critical role that well-designed infrastructure plays in our cities, our communities, and our lives.”
The Terminal B project is also a finalist in the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) New York Chapter Awards for Excellence in Development. With the awards ceremony taking place in November 2022, LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B is one of two finalists in the Excellence in Civic Development category.
The terminal symbolizes the top-to-bottom transformation of one of the nation’s highest-profile airports. The transparent, fluid design of the 850,000-square-foot Arrivals and Departures Hall (headhouse) celebrates movement while conveying a civic presence in a city known for its architecture. In the spirit of grand transportation centers like New York’s celebrated Grand Central Terminal, the new Terminal B ushers in a new era of mobility and travel.
Both awards honor the Terminal B design as a world-class airport transformation fit for the 21st century. They highlight the terminal’s public art, indoor pocket parks, abundant concessions, and pedestrian skybridges that allow passengers to access gates while planes safely taxi below. The awards recognize Terminal B’s LEED v4 Gold certification, the first airport terminal to receive the certification under the more stringent sustainability requirements.
