BLACKSBURG, VA — Skanska announces the completion of the $71 million Undergraduate Science Laboratory Building at Virginia Tech. The four-story, approximately 102,746-square-foot facility supports the university’s growing enrollment in STEM degrees and provides collaborative interdisciplinary lab space for research and innovation.
“The completion of the Undergraduate Science Lab Building marks another proud chapter in our enduring relationship with Virginia Tech,” said Mark Balling, General Manager for Skanska USA Building’s Mid-Atlantic region. “We’re proud to continue our shared vision to advance science education and create spaces that inspire learning and discovery for students and faculty for generations to come.”
Designed to be flexible and adaptable, the facility features 26 flexible specialty laboratories to serve the College of Science, College of Engineering, College of Natural Resources and Environment, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Additionally, the new undergraduate science laboratory building also incorporates collaborative and informal study areas, general classrooms, and graduate teaching assistant workspaces.
In support of the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment, the building aims to achieve LEED Silver certification. Skanska is leading the charge and has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon by 2045 in its operations and across its entire value chain.
Skanska continues its presence at Virginia Tech with the current new construction of the five-story engineering building, Mitchell Hall. Once completed, Mitchell Hall will be one of the largest buildings on Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus.
