DURHAM, NC — Skanska has earned three national awards from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) including the National Award of Merit for the Commercial/Office Building Category, the National Award of Excellence for the Commercial/Office Building Category, and Best in Process for its Wake Technical Community College Central Energy Plant (CEP).
Skanska constructed the Central Energy Plant at Wake Tech East, the newest campus at North Carolina's largest community college. The 15,700-square-foot single-story facility harnesses sustainable energy to heat and cool the entire new campus. It leverages renewable technologies, including geothermal and solar systems, to deliver significant energy cost reductions and optimal performance. The system uses one-third less energy and emits 50 percent less carbon than traditional boiler/chiller setups.
“This project with Wake Tech is a leading example of environmental stewardship and showcases our combined commitment to sustainable, innovative building practices and smart energy solutions,” said Mark Balling, Executive Vice President of Skanska USA Building’s Mid-Atlantic Region.
Recognition from DBIA for the design, execution, and construction of the Central Energy Plant at Wake Tech East represents Skanska’s commitment to sustainable and innovative building practices, as well as their trajectory toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045.
“As design-build approaches nearly half of all construction spending, we continue to see extraordinary projects that raise the bar for success for design-build teams across the country, pushing the limits of high performance and optimizing triple-bottom-line success,” DBIA Executive Director/CEO Lisa Washington, CAE, said.
