DURHAM, NC — Skanska has been awarded a $71 million contract by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) for the renovation of the Walter Clinton Jackson Library, a central academic and community resource on UNCG’s main campus. Originally built in the 1950s, the four-story library and the nine-story 1970s tower addition will undergo a renovation to integrate high technology group studies, central convening spaces, and increased capacity for use by individual students.
“We’re honored to renew our collaboration with UNC Greensboro for the transformative renovation of Jackson Library,” said Mark Balling, Executive Vice President of Skanska USA Building’s Mid-Atlantic Region. “Together, we are committed to enhancing this cornerstone investment into a more vibrant hub for learning, innovation, and community building in the heart of the UNCG campus.”
Situated at the physical and academic heart of the university, the 240,000-square-foot renovation will improve accessibility and help foster connection, discovery, and community. The facility is named after Walter Clinton Jackson, the author who also served in various UNCG leadership roles between 1909 and 1950.
Construction will be completed in late 2027. Jackson Library will remain open throughout the renovation, even as service and study spaces are temporarily reduced as spaces are renovated.
