MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Stantec, a global sustainable design and engineering company, has been selected to lead the design for the SC 90 East Cox Ferry Road widening project, led by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and Horry County. The project will widen approximately 23 miles of roadway and will expand the corridor from two lanes to five. The expansion efforts will also introduce new sidewalks and shared-use paths along the corridor.
The corridor primarily serves local residents and is being expanded to address rapid population growth and increased traffic congestion in Horry County, which includes the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area. The roadway expansion will also look to improve safety throughout the corridor and aim to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes. Horry County is ranked within the top 100 counties in the country for annual growth, with the Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach metropolitan area ranking as the third-fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States.
Construction of the SC 90 road widening project will be segmented into up to four phases. The project is funded by the Horry County RIDE 4 Sales Tax Commission.

Stantec has a long history of supporting roadway design across the United States. The firm served as prime consultant on the Route 3, Route 46, Valley Road, and Notch Road Interchange Reconstruction Project in New Jersey, a project aimed at reducing congestion, improving safety, and increasing connectivity from northern New Jersey to Manhattan, New York. Stantec also led the design efforts for the improvements of the Golden Glades Interchange, a project that improved movement southbound along Florida’s Turnpike.
