SAN RAMON, CA — COWI North America has received two project awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies of California (ACEC California), an engineering association recognizing excellence in both public and private works infrastructure.

One award recognizes the Iron Horse Trail Overcrossing at Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon, California. Commissioned by the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, the pedestrian and cyclist bridge provides a safe crossing over one of the city’s busiest arterial corridors while ensuring uninterrupted connectivity along the heavily used Iron Horse Trail.

Serving as prime consultant and engineer of record, COWI led design, engineering, and construction phase support for the project. The completed structure is a 340-foot, six-span cable-stayed bridge featuring a central V-shaped steel pylon, architecturally integrated lighting and railing systems, and approximately 570 feet of retaining wall approaches.

The project enhances safety and connectivity for tens of thousands of residents and trail users. While delivered within its full project budget, innovative design and accelerated construction approaches helped minimize traffic disruption, shorten construction duration, and reduce environmental and community impacts.

A second award recognizes the Mount Vernon Viaduct project in San Bernardino, California, delivered for the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority in collaboration with Accenture Infrastructure and Capital Projects, LLC. Constructed by a joint venture of Traylor and Granite utilizing design-build delivery, the new viaduct blends historic infrastructure with modern engineering performance.

Designed to meet stringent seismic and safety standards, the structure improves reliability while reconnecting key parts of the city for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The project strengthens regional mobility, supports economic activity, and enhances daily access for residents and businesses, demonstrating how infrastructure renewal can simultaneously preserve heritage and advance sustainability.

“These awards reflect the strategic value our clients place on infrastructure that delivers long-term community benefit while meeting the highest technical standards,” said Jack Gerwick, Market Director at COWI. “They underscore COWI’s commitment to partnering with owners to deliver resilient, future-ready solutions that improve mobility, safety, and quality of life while supporting economic growth. Together, the projects reflect COWI’s approach to innovation, collaboration, and sustainable design in the delivery of complex infrastructure serving both current and future needs.”
