LOS ANGELES, CA — PCL Construction Inc., in partnership with Stantec, has been selected to deliver the Lake Mathews Pressure Control Structure and Electrical System Upgrades project, a major modernization effort for one of Southern California’s most critical water facilities. The project will upgrade mechanical and electrical systems critical to Metropolitan Water District's ability to reliably deliver water to its 26 member agencies, which together serve 19 million people across Southern California.
Delivered through a progressive design-build model, the project will enhance the reliability and resiliency of Metropolitan’s Lake Mathews facility, which is the final storage and distribution hub for water conveyed from the Colorado River to Southern California through the Colorado River Aqueduct.
“By applying our deep experience with progressive design‑build delivery, we are helping modernize infrastructure that supports millions of Southern Californians while adhering to Metropolitan’s project budget,” said Ankur Talwar, District Manager for PCL’s Civil operations in the West.
The project consists of constructing a new pressure control facility, approximately 70 to 80 feet deep, with a 14-foot-diameter pipeline that bypasses the existing forebay and pressure control structure. The electrical system upgrades will improve long‑term reliability and continuity and include new main switchgear served by a new Southern California Edison service.
Completion is expected by 2033.
