BATESVILLE, MS — The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) announces several construction and maintenance project updates in north Mississippi.
“These projects are vital to our communities in northwest Mississippi, and they wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous level of support we receive from our state legislature and executive branch,” said Mitch Turner, District 2 Engineer.
Work is progressing on the replacement of four bridges on State Route 9 south of Calhoun City in Calhoun County. At Site 1, the contractor has finished constructing two box culverts and one bridge deck. At Site 2, the contractor is finishing the bridge deck construction. Earthwork operations are anticipated to resume as soon as weather permits at both sites. The $24 million contract was awarded to Manhattan Road & Bridge Company of Little Rock, Arkansas, and work is expected to be complete in summer 2025.
A project to construct six bridges on State Route 8 is underway in Calhoun and Grenada counties. In Grenada County, traffic has been swapped onto the newly constructed roadway. The contractor has completed all work except for the permanent traffic stripe. The $25 million contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc. of Columbia, Mississippi, and is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Work is progressing on the replacement of five bridges on State Route 442 in Leflore County. The new bridges are complete at Sites 1, 2, 4, and 5 and are open to traffic. The contractor has completed the bridge at Site 3, and asphalt paving operations are scheduled to begin soon. The $12.4 million contract was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co. Inc. of Nesbit, Mississippi. Construction is expected to be complete in spring 2025.

A project is underway to replace a bridge on State Route 35 just north of Kosciusko in Attala County. Traffic has been swapped onto the new roadway. The contractor has completed all work except for the permanent traffic stripe. The $6.5 million contract was awarded to Joe McGee Construction Company, Inc. of Lake, Mississippi, and the project is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
A project to replace four bridges along U.S. 51 in Yalobusha County is progressing. The detour bridges at Site 1 and 2 have been completed and earthwork operations for the detour roads is ongoing. The $20 million project was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co., Inc. Construction is expected to be complete in summer 2026.
Work has started on the replacement of a bridge on U.S. 51 over the Yocona River in Yalobusha County. The old bridge has been removed, and box culvert construction is complete. Work on the foundations of the new bridge has begun, and earthwork operations continue. Century Construction of Ridgeland, Mississippi, was awarded the $12.2 million contract. Work is expected to be complete by spring 2026.
A project is underway to construct roundabouts at the State Route 7 ramps and University Avenue in Lafayette County. Grading and drainage work between the existing interchange ramps is nearing completion. The $4.9 million contract was awarded to Cook & Son Construction LLC of Sherwood, Arkansas. Work is expected to be complete in summer 2026.

A project to replace five bridges along U.S. 51 continues in Carroll County. Construction of the bridges and the roadway embankment is ongoing at four of the bridge sites. The $15.9 project was awarded to Ste-Bil Grading Inc. of Waterford, Mississippi. Construction is expected to be complete in fall of 2026.
Work is progressing on a new roundabout on U.S. 51 in Tate County. The contractor is currently working on the curb and gutter with asphalt paving operations to begin when weather conditions allow. The contractor closed the intersection on July 8 to complete the work. The $2.9 million contract was awarded to Ste-Bil Grading Inc. Work is expected to be complete in spring 2025.
Work has started on intersection improvements at U.S. 51 and Turman Drive in Southaven. The $1.2 million contract was awarded to J.M. Duncan Construction of Ripley, Mississippi. Work is expected to be complete in spring 2025.
