Reilly Joins HNTB as National Tunnel Practice Consultant

BOSTON, MA — HNTB announces that John Reilly, PE, has joined as National Tunnel Practice Consultant. In this role, Reilly will serve as a technical resource to clients and on various projects. He is based in HNTB’s Boston, Massachusetts, office.

Reilly brings four decades of leadership experience and technical expertise in many aspects of complex underground construction. His previous projects include metro and light rail systems, structures, tunnels, highways, bridges, and airports worldwide.

“John is internationally known as one of the world’s top technical experts and thought leaders in risk assessment and cost estimating for large complex programs and projects,” said Sanja Zlatanic, PE, HNTB National Tunnel Practice Chair, Senior Vice President, and HNTB Fellow. “This year is the 20th anniversary of the Cost Estimate Validation Process, which John and others initiated to better estimate the probable cost of complex megaprojects and to evaluate potential risks to the projects' budgets and schedules. In addition, John’s expertise involves management, strategic planning, contracting, partnering, and value engineering for complex infrastructure, systems, and underground programs.”

Prior to joining HNTB, Reilly was President of his own consulting firm for many years. Earlier in his career, he served as Project Manager, Consultant Team for the long-range planning of Boston’s Logan Airport and the Cross-Harbor Regional Transportation program. He also was Project Director for management, design development, and construction management services for Boston’s Southwest Corridor Transit, Rail, Highway, and Urban Design Project, as well as a Partner in a Washington D.C.-based structural design office offering advanced design and historical remediation.

Reilly served as President of the American Underground Construction Association (1999-2001) and Chair of two International Tunneling Association Working Groups. He was awarded a 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Underground Construction Association and has been published more than 100 times.
