Skanska Awarded $39M Contract to Design and Reconstruct Maffa Way and Mystic Avenue Bridges in Boston and Somerville

BOSTON/SOMERVILLE, MA — Skanska announces that it has been awarded a contract by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to carry out the $39 million design and reconstruction of the Maffa Way and Mystic Avenue Bridges located in Boston and Somerville, Massachusetts. The project will significantly improve transit across two of the most highly trafficked roadways in the region and provide a multi-modal link between the two cities.

“The Maffa Way and Mystic Avenue Bridges are vital roadways within Massachusetts’s local and regional transportation network,” said Paul Pedini, Senior Vice President for Skanska USA Civil’s New England region. “Not only will the planned improvements increase traffic capacity, but they will in tandem better accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, and transit commuters, enhancing the overall functionality of the bridges upon completion.”

The design-build project consists of replacing two steel stringers and concrete deck superstructures, rehabilitating the existing bridge substructures, and reconstructing and resurfacing approximately 1,800 feet along Maffa Way and Mystic Avenue.

The newly reconstructed Maffa Way Bridge will include a 10-foot, two-way bike lane separated from traffic with a raised median, in addition to an approximately 12-foot-wide sidewalk that will be added on the south side of the bridge. The new Mystic Avenue bridge will also include a 12-foot-wide, shared-use path on the north side of the roadway for pedestrians and bicycles. Both bridges include dedicated bus lanes.

The project is expected to reach completion in December 2026.
