MDT Completes First Phase of Moving Missoula Operations to the Wye

MISSOULA, MT — After 58 years on West Broadway Street, the Missoula District headquarters for the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is relocating. The first phase of the move is complete, with office staff and Motor Carrier Services now working at 8350 U.S. Highway 10.

“When Decker Truck Line listed their Missoula terminal for sale in January 2025, we moved quickly to take advantage of the great opportunity it presented,” MDT Director Christopher Dorrington said. “We had outgrown our old facility, and mobilizing large equipment via Broadway has been getting tougher by the day.”

The Decker property is adjacent to a property the department already owns. With legislative approval, the new facility was purchased for approximately $9 million, which is significantly less than the $22 million estimate to design and construct an equivalent office and shop.

“The move makes so much sense,” Dorrington said. “More efficient access to the roads we maintain and improved safety for our heavy trucks and equipment are quick benefits for MDT moving off of Broadway and out to the Wye.”

The annual average daily traffic on West Broadway Street near MDT is just over 22,000 vehicles.

Shop staff, mechanics, machinists, and service combo equipment will move later this year when renovations are complete at the MDT Wye site equipment shop. In early 2028, construction of equipment storage, welding shop, and construction testing laboratory will be complete and will house MDT’s Missoula area highway maintenance crew, communications tech, carpenter, welder, and construction lab employees.

Once the move is complete, there will be 60 employees at the new Missoula District headquarters.
