SEATTLE, WA — Skanska has started construction of the new Renton High School. When complete, the new three-story, 350,000-square-foot comprehensive high school will have classroom capacity for 1,600 students. The new school will sit on an expanded 33.3-acre site occupied by the current high school.
The campus will include core classrooms and other learning environments for Career and Technical Education, art, science, and electives. Health services spaces, community spaces, a library, cafeteria, commons, gymnasiums, and special services spaces also will be part of the new campus, as will a lighted baseball/softball field and a practice football/soccer field.
“We’re honored to partner with the Renton School District to bring this project to life and are excited to create a high school that students, faculty, staff, and community members will be proud [to] call the new home of the Redhawks for generations to come,” said Don Kowalchuk, Executive Vice President - General Manager of Skanska USA Building’s Puget Sound area operations. “We’re personally invested in this project, as many of our team members and partners live in and around Renton, and we’re proud to offer our experience and local knowledge all the way through the school’s grand opening.”
Work will be performed in multiple phases coordinated around ongoing school operations, as the current high school will remain occupied during construction. Most of the current high school will be demolished later in the project timeline, though the original part of the Renton High School built in the 1930s will remain in place, along with the IKEA Performing Arts Center. The new school is projected to open in fall 2029.
Renton High School is the oldest high school in the district. Its original building, which included a bell tower, opened in 1911 and was replaced in 1932 by the high school that serves students today. The school has been expanded and remodeled multiple times since then.
