Stanley Consultants Taps Roling to Lead Power Generation Practice

Mathew Roling

DENVER, CO — Stanley Consultants hires Mathew Roling to head its power generation consulting practice. A Mechanical Engineer by training and 21-year industry veteran, he will help implement the transition to distributed energy and integrated resource planning and away from carbon producing electric generation, while maintaining the company’s traditional power generation practice.

Roling is based in the company’s Denver offices, reporting to energy, power and environmental market leader Lance Sulzen. Member-owned Stanley Consultants is a worldwide provider of engineering, environmental and construction services.

“Matt will help us execute our strategy of delivering cost-effective distributed energy solutions to our clients, with an emphasis on microgrids, distributed energy resources, energy storage, reciprocating combustion engine installation, permitting and related projects,” Sulzen said. “Structure follows strategy and Matt will be a big part of defining and building that structure.”

Roling, most recently National Business Development Leader at HDR, has been a business developer and strategist for all aspects of power generation, including natural gas plants, renewables, storage, distributed generation, data centers and integrated resource planning. He has also overseen broader engineering services, contracting, program management, greenfield and brownfield development, site assessments, marketing and public relations. Previously he was Design Engineer and Account Manager with General Electric and earned degrees in mechanical engineering and physics and a Master of Business Administration.

Roling said that consulting engineering companies such as Stanley Consultants must change the way they do business away from a pure design approach to more of a consulting, adaptive one.

“Front-end development on projects is becoming paramount. We can’t wait for the request for proposal to come out and respond,” Roling said. “Instead of just engineering, it’s economics, contract configuration, risk and asset management.”
