DENVER, CO — HDR's Julianne Scherer has been named U.S. Central Region Civic Director of its architecture practice. She most recently served as Managing Principal of the firm’s architecture studio in Denver, Colorado.

“Regardless of typology, civic architecture is a community asset — from operations and maintenance facilities to sports and recreation environments,” HDR Civic Director Nick Konen said. “Julianne brings passion, leadership, and a roster of successful projects for diverse clients to her new regional director role, and I anticipate collaborative teams will deliver impressive architecture, planning, and integrated design under her leadership.”

As U.S. Central Region Civic Director, Scherer will support HDR’s architecture studios in Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas to set goals and prioritize shared values that have positive impacts on client relationships and design outcomes. With more than 30 years of design, technical, and project management experience, Scherer’s skillset and expertise will enable teams to realize clients’ visions as new civic building typologies emerge and legacy structures evolve.

“As an architect and connector, I am passionate about community-driven projects and the transformative impact of applying design for the greater good,” Scherer said. “I am committed to harnessing our collective intelligence to improve our practice, mentor leaders, and recruit talent.”

Scherer serves on the board of both the Governors for the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Colorado chapter, of which she is a Past President. She is also a committee member for the Downtown Denver Partnership’s urban exploration program and served on the 2025 AIA/American Library Association Library Building Design Award jury.
