TUCSON, AZ — The Arizona Builders Alliance (ABA), a trade association for contractors in Arizona, hosted a round-table discussion with United States Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Congressman Juan Ciscomani, and ABA members to tackle pressing labor issues impacting the construction industry in Arizona.
The event, held at ABA’s office in Tucson, Arizona, was a platform for open dialogue on workforce shortages, regulatory challenges, and the future of skilled labor in the construction sector. ABA President Kim Davids, construction industry representatives from ABA member companies, and the Associated Builders and Contractors highlighted the importance of collaboration between industry leaders and policymakers.
Chavez-DeRemer shared her leadership experiences and emphasized the need to grow educational opportunities to build a skilled construction workforce. Ciscomani talked about his legislation aimed at addressing the workforce shortage for skilled construction workers and promoting policies that reduce unnecessary regulations.

"Addressing workforce shortages and regulatory challenges head-on is crucial for our industry's growth and sustainability. Several ABA members were also in attendance, including Achilles Inc., Advanced Controls Corp., ARC Point Labs of Tucson, Barker Contracting, Climatec, Cornerstone Electric, High Quality Electric, JB Steel, Kitchell, Lloyd Construction, Midstate Mechanical, Pate Contractors, Mighty Dog Roofing, Mintropy, Ninyo & Moore, and RG & Sons Plumbing. They engaged with Chavez-DeRemer on issues such as modernizing the pathway for legal immigration, safety concerns related to legalized marijuana, and state-level changes in drug testing policies.

“You’re building Arizona. You’re building this country,” Ciscomani said. “The current shortage of skilled construction workers is driving costs higher and causing project delays. Secretary Chavez-DeRemer and I are focused on promoting and expanding education programs that bolster the workforce of skilled construction workers, support high-demand, well-paying jobs, and support the vital construction industry.”
Chavez-DeRemer concluded the discussion by committing to follow up on key issues and expressing her intent to return for future engagements.
