With over two decades of experience in transportation, Spaethling is an industry expert in multimodal solutions who has played a role in expanding the Salt Lake City office presence, including supporting the recent Utah Transit Authority contract for program management services. As Office Leader, he will be responsible for the operations and growth of the office and oversee the delivery of complex infrastructure solutions for highways, light rail, bridges, and more in the Utah region.

Previously, Spaethling served as HNTB’s Northwest Division Sales Officer, helping guide the planning process and increase the sales pipeline for the region. He collaborated with the division offices on strategies to engage clients during the pandemic while also spearheading efforts to meet the division’s growth goals.
Spaethling earned his master’s degree in city planning at the University of Pennsylvania and his bachelor’s degree in international relations at Brown University. Currently, Spaethling is the Chair of the Transportation Research Board’s Intercity Passenger Rail Committee and collaborates with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials on rail research needs for state departments of transportation.
