WILLIAMS COUNTY, ND — Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin Electric) has selected PCL Industrial Construction Co. (PCL) as the general contractor for the Bison Generation Station, a new natural gas-fueled generation facility in Williams County, North Dakota. The full project represents one of the largest investments ever undertaken by Basin Electric to provide dispatchable power to meet growing traditional-load demand across the region while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
The Bison Generation Station will feature two natural gas-fueled combined-cycle units with a total capacity up to 1,490 megawatts (MW), making it the largest power plant in North Dakota. This major investment will strengthen Basin Electric’s ability to deliver electricity to its 139 member cooperatives while incorporating advanced technology to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
Construction begins in early 2026, with major commercial operation dates in 2029 and 2030. The project will create approximately 1,000 jobs during peak construction and 40 to 50 permanent positions for operations and maintenance
“We’re proud to help deliver the largest power plant in North Dakota,” said Bobby Youngblood, Project Director at PCL. “The Bison Generation Station will serve as a staple of the state’s energy landscape, ensuring reliable, efficient power to Basin Electric’s members by meeting growing demand and driving economic growth across the region.”
PCL will collaborate closely with Basin Electric and their project partners to manage construction packages, coordinate major equipment deliveries, and ensure safe and timely execution of this critical infrastructure project.
