MILWAUKEE, WI — Gilbane, in partnership with the Milwaukee County Zoo and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee, announces the opening of the Adventure Africa Phase III: Rhino Habitat, an exhibit that brings eastern black rhinos back to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the first time since 2021. This milestone marks the completion of the zoo’s multi-year Adventure Africa initiative.
The new Ladish Co. Foundation Rhino Care Center and Hippo Indoor Haven, along with the expanded outdoor habitat, provide spaces designed to prioritize animal welfare and create immersive guest experiences. The Rhino Care Center includes specialized flooring and enrichment features to support the health and comfort of the rhinos, while Hippo Indoor Haven features a pool that offers guests an eye-level view of the zoo’s hippo and will remain open during the winter months for year-round engagement.
“We are thrilled to welcome rhinos back to Milwaukee County Zoo,” said Amos Morris, Executive Director of the Milwaukee County Zoo. “This project caps off years of planning and collaboration. It’s a proud day for our community, and we look forward to guests learning about conservation while enjoying closer-than-ever views of these magnificent animals.”
The Zoological Society of Milwaukee played a pivotal role in funding and supporting the project.
“With the generosity of our donors and partners, we’ve created a habitat that will inspire generations," said Jodi Gibson, President & CEO of the Zoological Society. "This space reflects our commitment to animal care, education, and conservation.”

Gilbane served as construction manager for the project. The habitat required innovative solutions, including reinforced barriers for rhinos, specialized flooring, and climate-controlled spaces to ensure animal safety and comfort. Gilbane also coordinated closely with zoo staff to integrate sustainability features and guest engagement elements.
“We are honored to partner with the zoo and the Zoological Society on this landmark project,” said Alicia Dupies, Vice President and Milwaukee Business Leader for Gilbane Building. “Our team worked diligently to ensure the habitat meets the highest standards for animal welfare and guest experience. Seeing rhinos return to Milwaukee is a moment of pride for everyone involved.”
“This habitat was designed with sustainability and flexibility in mind, creating spaces that benefit the animals and inspire empathy among visitors,” said Josh Stenz, Senior Project Manager at Gilbane Building. “It’s been incredible to help bring this vision to life.”
The Ladish Co. Foundation Rhino Care Center and Hippo Indoor Haven joins the recently completed Humboldt Penguin Exhibit, another Gilbane-led renovation that tripled the size of the penguin pool and introduced an immersive viewing experience at the zoo’s main entrance.
