Sorel, a Vice President, brings more than 40 years of public- and private-sector transportation leadership experience to the role. As Minneapolis Office Leader, he leads more than 50 multi-disciplinary professionals committed to improving mobility across the state through highway, bridge, toll, aviation, and transit projects, as well as emerging transportation technologies. Sorel oversees all office operations, including business development, planning, recruitment, and retention.
Prior to HNTB, Sorel managed Minnesota operations for another transportation consulting firm. He began his career in 1978 with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), serving for 30 years in a variety of leadership positions. As FHWA’s Minnesota Division Administrator in 2007, Sorel received the Presidential Honor for his role organizing federal response, recovery, and rebuilding efforts after the I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis. In addition to spearheading MnDOT and NDDOT, Sorel also has led AAA Minneapolis, successful transportation consulting start-ups, and the U.S. Department of Transportation team responsible for building infrastructure in Salt Lake City for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
Sorel has been active in several industry associations. He was the North Dakota representative for the Governors Highway Safety Association and served on the executive boards for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Transportation Research Board. He also served on the boards of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Minnesota, and the Independent Transportation Network of America.
Sorel earned a Master of Business Administration from Thomas College and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the State University of New York, Buffalo.
