CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN — Superior Construction has begun work on two small structure replacement projects for the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Crawfordsville District, addressing aging pipe infrastructure across Montgomery and Putnam counties.
In Montgomery County, Superior is replacing two deteriorating metal pipe culverts with a 48-foot precast concrete box culvert at SR 32 near McFarland Ditch. The existing pipes had rusted and degraded over time, and a recent flood event accelerated the need for replacement. The larger box culvert is designed to increase water capacity and reduce upstream flooding in the surrounding rural area. Superior crews are self-performing all excavation, embankment, and box culvert installation. The work requires precise sequencing and the flexibility to adjust quickly as weather conditions change.
In Putnam County, Superior is replacing seven corrugated metal pipe crossings beneath a 3-mile stretch of U.S. 231, a primary corridor connecting Greencastle to Interstate 70. The deteriorating pipes are being replaced with reinforced concrete pipe built to resist corrosion and serve the corridor for decades to come. Because U.S. 231 serves homes, businesses, and a nearby hospital, Superior developed a construction approach focused on minimizing disruption. Much of the work is being completed under flagging operations to reduce lane closures. The team coordinated directly with 18 homeowners and two businesses before construction began to help maintain access throughout the project.
