Moving More with Less

by: Lindsey Gerhold, Bobcat Company

On today’s busy job sites, efficient material handling is often the difference between a project that stays on schedule and one that falls behind. Whether crews work in tight urban spaces or across large-scale sites, compact loaders, backhoe loaders, and wheel loaders can streamline the movement of materials. Their unique blend of power, maneuverability, and attachment versatility makes them an essential job site tool.

Choosing the right machine for the job — and pairing it with the right attachment — helps contractors cut down on manual labor and complete projects faster.

Compact Loaders: Small Machines, Big Productivity

Compact loaders, including track and skid-steer loaders, are among the most versatile machines on a job site. Their compact footprint makes them ideal for congested areas or interior demolition to handle palletized materials such as brick, block, or bags of cement. Compact track loaders’ rubber tracks provide superior flotation and stability, making them well-suited for soft or uneven ground. Skid-steer loaders’ tires enable a true zero-turn radius on smooth or paved surfaces, making them ideal for work in tight spaces.

For effective material handling, operators should pay close attention to rated operating capacity, keep loads low when traveling, and use joystick controls that improve precision with lifting. Because compact loaders can be paired with dozens of attachments, they often become a contractor’s versatile go-to machine — switching quickly between hauling debris, loading trucks, grading surfaces, or cleaning up.

Wheel Loaders: Heavy Lifting, Fast Moving

When projects require moving large volumes of material quickly, turn to wheel loaders. Compact wheel loaders offer high bucket capacity and lift height along with speed. This combination of higher rated operating capacity, larger bucket size, and faster travel makes them especially efficient for material handling.

When the job calls for even more productivity, scaling up to a larger wheel loader allows operators to handle bigger loads and cover more ground in less time. Across job sites, wheel loaders stand out for their ability to carry more material and move it faster than other compact equipment options.

Backhoe Loaders: Enduring Workhorse

Backhoe loaders combine the functionality of a tractor, loader, and excavator into a single package. These loaders are regaining popularity because they bring two-in-one versatility: a front loader for moving materials and a rear digging arm for trenching and excavation.

Modern backhoes deliver impressive power without sacrificing maneuverability. For example, Bobcat’s B760 delivers 96 horsepower and offers nearly 180 degrees of swing to make it nimble for tighter sites. Backhoe loaders are especially valuable for small- to mid-sized projects where fleet managers want one machine to cover multiple tasks.

With smart load management and the ability to handle both earthmoving and lifting duties, backhoe loaders remain a cost-effective solution, especially for crews looking to maximize operator efficiency.

Attachments by Application: Maximizing Versatility

Attachments often determine how productive a machine will be on a material handling project. Consider these options:

Heavy-Duty Bucket
A heavy-duty bucket is an essential tool for a variety of tasks, not just moving materials. This attachment can also cut grade, flatten work areas, and scrape materials off hard surfaces.

Rock Bucket
To prepare and clear job sites, a rock bucket attachment’s interconnected tines sift concrete rubble, rocks, debris, and other unwanted objects while soil filters through — saving time and base material while lowering haul-away costs.

Pallet Fork
This go-to attachment can carry and unload pallets of blocks, pavers, concrete mix, and other bulky, bagged, or palletized materials across a job site.

Industrial Grapple
Designed to manage a wide variety of materials with ease, industrial grapple attachments enable machines to handle and transport demolition rubble, building materials, recycling, salvage, or scrap materials.

Lifting the Bottom Line

Material handling has always been a core part of construction, but how it’s approached continues to evolve. Compact loaders, backhoe loaders, and wheel loaders each offer unique strengths — from maneuverability to reach to all-in-one versatility.

When combined with the right attachment, these machines not only reduce physical strain on workers but also cut downtime and help contractors and operators accomplish more.
