SANDY, UT — Sandy city officials, community leaders, and project partners recently gathered to break ground on the new Alta Canyon Sports Complex, marking a major milestone for recreation and community wellness in Sandy, Utah.
Replacing the 40-year-old Alta Canyon Sports Center is a modern recreation and community center designed to meet the evolving needs of Sandy’s growing population. The complex is expected to open in early 2027.
The comprehensive two-level facility will serve residents of all ages and fitness levels. The first level will house a full-size gymnasium, an indoor turf field, a community room, group fitness spaces, an outdoor patio and exercise room, pool lockers, nine changing rooms, and modern staff offices and reception area. The second level will feature an indoor walking track, three dedicated cardio fitness areas, a free weight area, weight machines, and an outdoor patio with classroom space.
The design will uphold the center’s signature panoramic views of the Wasatch Mountains that have made it a community gathering place for generations.
The project represents a successful public-private partnership, with funding provided by Sandy City, the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation (which contributed $2 million), and Salt Lake County’s Tourism, Recreation, Culture, and Convention program.
